Many of you will be now going to write entrance exams with an inbound ambition to join great engineering colleges in India.Every student desires to have his Btech from an IIT (eventhough all does not express it ).As we all know that IITs and NITs are best places to take engineering degree in India. But only high standard students(or highly trained students) are able to crack IIT-JEE and AIEEE.Those are able to get good rank in these entrance exam go ahead join any IITs or NITs success will be yours for sure. There are many students who leave the seats in NITs and many other important institutions saying that the distance is large, too far from home, place is not good etc. Those people just remember one thing you are taking one of the most bad decisions in your life, for which you may regret in future. This article is mainly for those who are good in studies but not able to get into the top institutions in India.

Obtained An Average Rank In State Entrance. What to do next????
This situation is faced by numerous students after their entrance exam.Through this post i am trying to give answers to some of the questions in their mind. This may be helpful for them to select a good college.

Is engineering branch much important?

Which place to choose for study?

Is placements an important factor to judge a college?

Does last rank details gives a clear idea about a college?

Are college websites to be believed?

Is Engineering Branch much important?
Ofcourse No.Engineering branch is not that important.During the time of placements most of the bulk recruiters just ask for a Btech degree. It can be a degree in any stream. But it is better to take a btech degree in circuit branches(Electronics, computer science, information technology, electrical, applied electronics etc.) if you are joining an average rated engineering college. But If you are highly interested in any other branches just go for it.Mechanical engineering,Civil Engineering etc also have very high scope.

Which place to choose for study?
It is always better to study in a city. The students studying in a city gets more exposure when compared to those colleges in rural areas.Apart from that the rate of placements in cities are very high when compared to that of rural areas(unless your college is really excellent).

Is placements an important factor to judge a college?
Placements are an important factor to select a college. But it should not be only placements that you consider to select a college. There are many colleges which has very high placement records(the college may be in a city where a lot of pooled placements occur) but lagging far behind in infrastructure, quality of faculty etc.

Does last rank details gives a clear idea about a college?
Last rank details does not give a clear cut idea about a college. It only gives a vague idea regarding the quality of a college. But it can be considered as a factor to choose a college.A college which shows consistently low last rank details will be bad college for sure.It is always good to visit a college directly and rate it,if possible.

Are College websites to be believed?
Dont fully believe college websites.Every college tries to show their college as the best. Some college websites show big big buildings but it may be the pictures of the entire institution which may contain engineering college, arts college,MBA college, other proffessional colleges etc.On the other hand there are some good colleges who never update their website, thus their websites look dull.It does not indicate that the college is bad.As i already said the best way to judge the quality of a college is to visit the college directly.

Through this post i have tried to answer some of your doubts.I think it will be useful for the students.Even after considering many factors, still the college you joined ended upto be bad, dont get dishearted just study well success will be yours. You can even try to get a good GATE score and do an MTech in an IIT if you prepare well during your Btech.

Guest Writer : Sujith is a Part time blogger from Kerala. Basically he is a Btech student and does blogging as a hobby. At present he is running www.worldofgprs.com which gives information regarding GPRS,3G,latest telecom news, mobile phones etc.

You may have heard about IAS/IPS exams or officers a lot of times. If you have not then you should first know the full form of IAS and IPS. IAS refers to Indian Administrative Services and IPS refers to Indian Police Services. The procedure for becoming an IAS and IPS officer is same. IAS and IPS are very good career options for anyone who wants to be a part of Indian government and help the country by getting in to the system. IAS/IPS is a very prestigious rank. It is not really easy to become an IAS/IPS. Here are a few steps one needs to take for becoming an IAS/IPS.

First, in order to become an IAS/IPS officer, an individual is required to have a degree from an Indian University or a degree of same qualification. Students who are in the final year of their degree course can also appear in the preliminary examination.

Second, you need to prepare yourself for appearing in the exams of Indian Civil Services. The exam for IAS/IPS is conducted in two steps. First step is the “preliminary exam”; which takes place in May/June and the second step is the main exam which takes place in October/November every year. It is not easy to beat IAS/IPS exams. A large number of people appear for Indian Civil Services exams every year. However, only a few get selected. It takes dedication and patience for clearing this exam and becoming an IAS/IPS officer.

Third, you need to fulfill all the requirements for being an IAS/IPS officer. There are various requirements like minimum age and maximum age; for becoming an IAS/IPS officer. 21 is the minimum and 30 is the maximum age for appearing in the exam of IAS/IPS. There is relaxation for the upper age limit for applicants belonging to SC/ST and OBC categories.

Fourth, after an individual clears both preliminary and the main exam for IAS/IPS then he is called for an interview. This interview is quite tough and it tests the confidence, approach and understanding of an individual. After clearing this interview, a person becomes an IAS/IPS officer.

The technology has undergone massive development lately. It is exciting to see that this advent of technology has really benefitted the common man. Computer, which was once used only by the governments of selected countries for their work, now has a prominent place in most parts of the world. More and more firms are now shifting from the traditional pen and paper approach to the modern computerized approach. Here is where Computer System Analysts come in. The main job of these people is to determine how much it will cost to fully computerize any system, may it be a business, a school, or a firm. Employing people with the required expertise in this field is very important, because only these people can predict the right cost of the job at hand.

Computer System Analysts, define goals for themselves assess the system, gather the data, do the appropriate research, and then they make a financial cost accounting model where, using mathematical tools techniques, they are able to predict the cost or value of the project at hand. They can predict correctly the amount needed to be spent on the hardware and software, and also that the right kind is being used.

As such, there is no formal course for being a computer system analyst. Most companies recruit graduates, especially the fresh college graduates, without any requirement. But many of the top-notch firms require that these people be graduates in computer science, and many define appropriate certification exams which have to be passed before applying to them.

Career prospects in this field are good. Most of the Computer System Analysts work in data processing firms, crunching out on the data. Many are employed by government agencies, or by people with large manufacturing firms. A lot of people are also turning to private businesses in this field. Remuneration is excellent, and the increments are frequent, but depend upon the quality of the work done. Salary in private companies is really good. Being a Computer System Analysts is worthy only of you can struggle at the start, and can work with contracts. Except these two, it is a golden career.

Speech-language pathology is the field where you work for the improvement of communication skills of another person. It is a very revered field and a great humanitarian cause attached is to it. Without the power of communication, a person is nothing more than body. Speech-language therapists are specialists who look into the speech and vocal production, language pronunciation problems and swallowing ailments. Giving speech therapy to a person is not a short-term process; rather it involves months of exercises for the tissues, repetitive instructions, and in many cases, the use of aids such as audio-visuals, to achieve the best of the results. This involves a lot of patience, and so this field is not for those who are short at temper!

The best time to administer speech therapy to a person suffering from speech disorders is the child age, and hence the employment opportunities for speech-language pathologists are more at the places which are concentrated about children, like schools, nursing homes, child care centers etc. Well qualified personnel can take up jobs with multi-specialty hospitals, and those which focus around speech-related issues.

Although, the job of a speech-language pathologist is not physically demanding, it is essential that they should be able to satisfy the emotions of the patient and his family, because most of the times people tend to panic after getting the news of one of their relatives suffering from a speech disorder. It is needed that they should be assured that it is curable. The work environment is clean and comforting, with the utmost privacy, since most clients insist on taking treatment at homes. The speech-language pathologists may actually spend a lot of time travelling between different places!

Speech-language pathologists need to pass special exams, and most jobs require that a person applying for a position of a speech therapist should have a master’s degree. Speech-language pathologists need to undergo courses which are like those for the doctor’s, with a deep understanding of the human mind and body. Since this is a specialized field, most of the speech therapists receive handsome salaries.

The joy of enabling someone to speak, and joining the string of his life with his surroundings is immeasurable, and those with a strong humanitarian heart are most welcome into this profession.

Software engineering involves the development and maintenance of software systems that are widely in use today. All the establishments, be it business, or technical, make wide use of computer systems today. All the work which was once done by manual labor has now been automated by means of computer software. Big industries are now equipped with all automatic processes. The value of computer software is now being realized everywhere. This also includes the explosive growth of the IT industry, which has really made software engineering a hot career.

Software engineers are people who work towards the development of applications and programs for the use of the industry. All this has to be done keeping in mind the demands of the customer. This requires a sound knowledge of mathematical principles, logic, a host of computer languages, and a reasonably good IQ level. Software engineers can either work towards development of user applications, like ERP solutions, or banking solutions, or they can work towards providing company-specific support, where they work as per the needs of their employers.

Education in the software field is being provided by many institutions. Almost all the major universities in India and abroad offer this course. Some of the premier institutes in India include the Indian Institutes of Technology and the National Institutes of Technology. There also are loads of other public and private institutions. Basic demands for entering a B.Tech or a B.Sc course in Software Engineering is a plus-two with science subjects. The interested people can pursue Master courses, and can even go upto the Ph.D level, because software is a research active field. Curricula of software engineering involves computer languages like C, C++,Java, internet programming, web designing, database management and many other subjects. There are also many certificate courses available from reputed firms like Cisco and Microsoft.

Jobs in the software field are many, and are growing day by day at a high rate. Computer professionals with strong programming skills and interpersonal skills are the most sought after. As for the remuneration, there are really no limits for a person to achieve. This is definitely one of those safe careers to pursue.

Rehabilitation therapy is a set of treatments that is given to those who lose their skills of performing daily chores, due to accidents or due to mental stress. A majority of drug abusers also need to undergo rehabilitation care for them to undo the damage done by drugs.

Rehabilitation is a medical procedure, but unlike having a tablet and getting cured, this procedure takes in a lot, both from the doctor as well as the patient. This is a long duration procedure, where, by means of intervention, exercises, and speech therapy, a patient’s mind is slowly brought back to the normal state of mind. This needs too much patience and care.

For example, rehabilitation therapy can be given to those who have sensory losses like the eyes, and also to people like amputees who are grafter with new skin. In the former case, the patient is taught how to survive without the sense of seeing, and in the latter, the patient is made at ease with the newly grafted limb. This helps to reduce the suffering.

Since this therapy can shape an individual’s life, only trained and expert individuals are allowed to perform this, and for certification, they have to complete a course called the Bachelor of Rehabilitation Therapy, which is normally a 3-4 year course, with an internship period of about 12 months. To sit for this course, the minimum requirement is a pass in10+2 under science subjects. There are B.Sc programs in the field of Rehabilitation Therapy, and some colleges even offer an advanced master’s degree.

Rehabilitation therapy students learn about the physical, cognitive and environmental sides of any illness or injury. Students are put through a learning module that teaches them how those patients regain the lost balance of their minds. They also study speech patterns and ways to improve them.

Job opportunities in this sector are many. There are jobs for rehabilitation therapists in private clinics, and big hospitals, and they have the avenue of private practice always open. Special schools and mental hospitals are another place where these professionals are required. If you can be patient, and can use your love and warmth to cure a person, this field is for you. Believe it: there is nothing more satisfying than the smile of a patient you’ve almost brought back into another life.

Growth in the world economy also involves the growth in the real estate sector. This booming sector has been coming up with a great pace in the last few years. Growing economy has led to the increased need of office spaces, high rise buildings, apartment complexes, condominiums etc. This has really given a push to this sector.

With so much of land and money involved, it is better that the real estate business be handled by professionals, who have experience in this field. Real estate management mainly involves the administration, operation, marketing, and management of the real estate. The work can be broadly classified under three categories, manly on the basis of the type of real estate being managed:-

Resident or site management

Property management

Real estate asset management

A trained real estate manager is also known as a property manager, and his main function is to serve as the owner’s representative of the property, to the outside world. A property manager handles all the affairs of the property like the taxes, bills, tenants etc. It is the job of this person to increase the income which the property provides to its owner, which is done by using the principles of real estate management.

It is required that the manager take note of the property’s commercial value in the market, and ear mark the potential candidates out of those vying to buy it, if the property is commercial.
Jobs in real estate management are of different types, again depending on the type of the property. On a broad scale, it can be said that commercial properties are generally managed with financial interests in view, while the domestic properties are managed with the object of keeping them preserved. Besides, insurance companies need a lot of experts on real estate, and many big companies may hire an expert real estate manager to take care of all their properties, which might be many and in multiple places.

Radiography has been an important field of medical work. This science of detection, since its discovery, has made medical diagnoses much easier and accurate. Radiography is a broad term that encompasses medical procedures like X-Ray, CT scan, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Fluoroscopy, Ultrasound and other technologies. All these tests, though differing a lot from each other, have the common motive of providing a complete picture of the inside of the human body. There is a great demand for trained radiographers, and the untrained people are never taken into work for this position, because a test gone wrong might cause the wrong diagnoses to be made, and may consequently, cause the patient his/her life.

Radiography can be broadly classified into two types: Diagnostic and Therapeutic. Diagnostic Radiography is the one which involves the detection part of radiography. Here, by means of various tests enlisted above, the patient’s body is examined. Here, use of both non-ionizing and ionizing radiation is made. The other form of radiation is the Therapeutic Radiation. Here, radiation is used to treat the human body of certain ailments like cancers and ulcers. This is a more aggressive form of Radiography. Then there is Dental Radiography, which teaches how to view teeth for the purpose of diagnoses.

The course on radiography is a one year certificate course, and also a two year diploma course. Many institutions also provide B.Sc courses in Radiography. B.Sc Radiography (Hons) is an internationally acclaimed degree, and is accepted world-wide. In India, the premier institutions for radiography include All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Medical College, Bangalore, and hoards of other institutions. There is a large scope for research in this field, and a lot of research opportunities are available in the Gulf countries and the Western European countries.

Career prospects in this field are emerging, because every medical establishment, be it a major hospital or a small clinic, needs radiography to diagnose the patients. And due to the finesse this job needs, professionals with the required expertise are recruited only. It is definitely, one of the good choices for your career.

Suppose that you’re a company, and for your business purposes, or for your in-house developments, you need to make certain purchases. Would it be the right approach if you just picked up anybody from your organization and sent that person to buy specialized equipment? Of course not, because he wouldn’t know a thing about the item he is going to purchase. All right, he can find out, you’d say. But that is not his job at your company, and he is most likely to do this extra work half-heartedly, which might have disastrous consequences for you company. Enter your purchasing manager- your man who can research the market and make the best deal. Of course, he’ll make you proud!

Purchasing Management is a growing, but a relatively less popular field of career. All organizations, regardless of their size, need materials and equipment, and they have a purchasing department. Be it the office stationary, or furniture, or building materials, or be it the very specialized machinery or a tool your company needs, this department always has the right resources to find and buy these. And having a specialized manager at the top of this department will only add to its finesse.

Quite a few universities in India are now offering a PG diploma course in Purchasing Management, of duration ranging from 6-18 months. Many universities also offer distance learning courses. After having a professional degree, jobs become easy. Purchasing managers are basically required to learn about the new products that their company requires, and make the best deal available. It is crucial for them to source suppliers which are reliable. Foreign language skills might come in handy when the trade has to be done with a supplier based in a foreign country.

Negotiation is a skill that purchase managers must be born with; for this is the one that will propel them further in their careers. They should be able to comprehend any form of given information, be it technical or anything, and should be good with the latest accounting softwares.

Opportunities are many. All PSU’s and private sector companies need them. In fact, any company which needs raw materials has a great need of purchase managers. So if you think you’re a good negotiator, and you have it in you, and then go ahead: opportunities are unlimited!
