The University of Calicut is located in the district of Malappuram in the Northern capital of Kerala, West Coast of India. It was established in the year 1968. The pioneer administrator was Dr.M.M.Ghani who is still honored for setting up a good foundation for the University. In the 1970’s the University was one of the most popular in the region. Winning numerous awards and excelling with outstanding performance in its academics. It was recognized as one of the leading academic models in the entire region. The Campus has a large acreage of over 400 acres. It is well known and appreciated by the local community.
The University departments include Health Science, Law, Engineering and Post Graduate. Each department all runs independently. This is to ensure that the institution runs smoothly without any outside influence or interference. There are also more than 250 Colleges affiliated to the university. Most of these colleges are private, but they offer training programs certified by the university. The government has approved the affiliation of these colleges to the university and has also supported most of the programs.
The University departments are organized into departments that are also sub-divided. This has been done to ensure that the administration is smooth running. This is also due to the large numbers of student attending the university. The Medical College is divided into three departments namely; Government Medical College, Government Dental College and Government Nursing College. The Law College has two sections the Government supported program and the privately supported programs, which runs evening lectures.
The Engineering College has the following colleges as its affiliates; Regional engineering college, Government Engineering College, and M.E.S. College of Engineering which run under a private funding program. The Post Graduate Program is the wing that has most affiliates these are; C.K.G. Memorial Government College , Farook College, Government College, Government Arts and Science College, Government College, Zamorin’s Guruvayoorappan College, Malabar Christian College, Muhammed Abdulrahiman Memorial College, Physical Education College, Providence College, REC, Sree Narayana Guru College, St.Joseph’s College, St.Mary’s College, N.M.S.M. College, Providence Women’s College, N.S.S.College, P.S.M.O.College.
The University also has a special Campus for Teachers Training Programs. The teachers training program unit has various departments which include; Government College of Teacher Education, A.W.H. College of Education, Meppayur Salafi College of Teacher Education, Farook Training College and Markaz Training College which is privately run and funded by donors. University also run parallel training programs at the Ayurveda College. Recently the University has also stated running parallel training programs at the following colleges; Sunniyya Arabic College, Rauzathul Uloom Arabic College, Madeemathul Uloom Arabic College, Darul Uloom Arabic College, Anvarul Islam Arabic College, Sullamussalam Arabic College, Ansar Arabic College.
