The Institute, popularly known as TISS is a very famous name in the field of study of Social Sciences. The Institute was established long back in 1936, due to the farsighted people centric vision of the Tata Group. It is the first institute of its kind in India.
In the beginning it was named as Sir Dorabji Tata Graduate School of Social Work after the name of its founder trust. Later on in 1944 it was renamed to the present name. Over the years the institute has developed its expertise in providing sound knowledge in the field of human resource development, policy, planning, training action strategy etc.
The institute provides an entire range of courses fron graduate programmes, post graduate programmes, doctoral programmes as well as certificate programmes. The graduation course offerd is a BA degree in social science. It is a three year full time graduation course. The candidates applying should have at least 50 % marks in their 10+2 examinations. The candidates are judged on the basis of a written test conducted buy TISS.
The written test is followed by a group discussion and personal interview. TISS ofeers post graduation programmes in various disciplines like Masters in Developmental Studies, Masters of Arts or Science in disaster Management, Master of Arts in Globalisation and Labour, Master of Arts in Disability Rehabilitation, Master of Arts in Education, Master of Health Administration, Master of Arts in Social Work, Master of Arts in Public Health, Master of Social Entrepreneurship etc.
The students are required to have a three year full time graduation degree from any recognized University and have to undergo the written test and interview procedures meant for the different courses. The reservation norms are followed as per set by the department of MHRD. Besides these courses, TISS also offers fellowship programmes.
