Punjab School Education Board (P.S.E.B)

The PSEB was formed by an act of legislation in1969. The Act has been amended further 3 times i.e. 1987, 2000. 2005. The PSEB is run by a chairman. The chairman running the board is on a 3 year contract. The other office bearers are the Assistant Chairman, Secretary and the Board Members.

To dispense its duties effectively, the board has wings which cover the major areas the board oversees these wings are: the Academic Wing, Publication of Text Books Wing, Examination Wing and the Administrative Wing.
The academic wing is further sub divided further for efficiency in carrying out the duties. The sub divisions are:

• Academic Branch
• Open School
• Punjabi Cell
• Field Program

The board was formed so that it could:

1. Check on the curriculum taught in Punjab schools. This is done through the academic wing headed by the Director Academics. The wing checks the subjects being taught in the school plus the text books the students are using to cover that curriculum.

2. Set, conduct and grade exams and award the students. The major/ main exams fall under the Examination wing. The wing in charge of the exams is headed by the Controller of Examinations and he is assisted by secretaries. The wing oversees over 4000 examination centers countrywide. The wing ensures that the exams do not leak out and they also employ the use of the police to ensure that the exams are not copied. After the exams are done this same wing is the one charged with the evaluating the exams, announce the results and determine the people who should be given accolades for their good performances.

3. Appoint examiners and determine how much they are to be paid

4. Put up the guide rules to be followed when admitting candidates to sit for exams.

5. Ensure that scholarships are distributed fairly

6. Publish and revise the text books to be used in Punjab schools. This is headed by the Publication of Text Books wing. The wing is headed by a Deputy Director and the job of the wing is to get the books to be printed by the private printing presses. It’s also charged with establishing text book sale depots.

7. Come up with ways e.g. Demonstrations, Seminars, Tours, exhibitions etc that are meant to improve the quality and the standard of teaching and education.

8. Promote extracurricular activities in the schools.
The Administration wing is charged with administering the board and establishment. The giving out of scholarships also falls under this group.
