Iiser Kolkata

Iiser Kolkata Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) was formed as a result of the Government intervention through the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) and are meant to reach the prestigious stages in the world setting where IISc, IITs and IIMs currently operate. In India there are five IISERs whereby Pune and Kolkata started operating in 2006 whereas Mohali started in 2007. In August there were two more entrants in the names of Bhopal and Thiruvanthapuram which began their sessions in August 2008. Each of these institutions offers its own degrees since they are autonomous. What the IISER aims at is to integrate education with research so that everything is carried out as one entity. Normally the students are encouraged to carry out their research work during their vacation in the first four years of their study in all the IISER institutes. In their final year of study that is in the fifth year all students are required to participate in a research seminar and also are required to carry out a research project in which a thesis has to be written by all candidate students.

There are some qualifications for one to join the IISER which is a must for anyone. Those students who pass this test will automatically qualify for admission and fellowship in IISER, Kolkata. The student must pass the Indian National Olympiad-2007. Class eight students who clear the Indian National Olympiad in Biology, Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics and are eligible of attending the Training Camps which is normally organized by Homi Bhabha centre for science teaching in 2007. Another similar qualification is that the students must have been selected for KVPY program. Teaching in these institutions is based on a semester system that is accompanied by intense teacher-student research, seminars, journal clubs and so on. There is continuous student assessment of their performance both in the lab and by theory. When the semester is coming to an end there is an examination for each end session which is held in December and April.

The students are required to part with a total of Rs 6000/- each semester and other charges that the institution may deem necessary. This fee is payable at the time of registration whereby a separate receipt is issued depending on what you are paying for. The fees may be paid in DD and addressed to the Director, IISER, Kolkata or any Indian overseas bank.

Can anyone out here would tell me what are the career prospects if one does an M.Sc. from IISER? I mean, what all jobs i would be able to apply for? would i get some kind of placement from this institute or not? or admission in this institute means a life long research work as a scientist?

I heard about IISER on 2008 when I was in class 11.I plan to go to IISER and do my Integrated Msc and then Phd from there .I have only one request, to include few courses on
    1-String theory (most imp)
    2-Astrophysics & space
    3-Relativity

I just want to know that if doing MSc. at IISER have better scope than B.tech in COEP/VJTI ?

  10. This is in interest to all students who are curious about the future after getting M.S. from IISER.
We, students of IISER Kolkata are here to inform you guys that IISER ain’t the right place to pursue degree. These institutes are nothing but great piece of shit on the face of Indian Education.Actually u guys are keep asking about the placement scenario of IISER so, let us first assure you that there is no such kind of thing here.IISER’s don’t have any placement cell & won’t be so in the near future. The system of IISER is completely corrupt, every faculty of IISER is trying to grab as much money possible from government funding. We are already stucked here as we don’t have any other option now but we really don’t want no more fools here like us.This is our suggestion to use your IIT-JEE Merit rank or EML rank to get admission to IIST Trivandrum or Merchant navy institutes like T.S. Chanakya, MERI Kolkata, MERI Mumbai. IISER officials will first assure about giving you placements but please don’t rely on those as they are all fake and also there is no connection between IISER’s and IIT’s. After getting M.S. from IISER, u guys won’t be able to get any kind of job even if u apply offline. We are requesting you guys to do simply Engineering wherever
u r getting admission, even a worst Pvt. Engineering college of India would be better than IISER.Anyone who is really interested in doing research should get admission to any well known university like Delhi University since the course curriculum of IISER is the worst ever syllabus than any university can ever have.IISER’s will be teaching you all the basic science subjects for the first two years as common to all students and from 3rd year onwards students will be asked to choose majors of their respective interest, but actually you will be wasting your 2 yrs while studying the bullshit course of IISER and from 3rd yr onwards u hav to study all ur major subjects which people used to study in 5 year of their normal Integrated M.Sc. course so, in summary u have to complete all ur major subjects in 3 years which students of Jadavpur university complete in 5 years with in-depth knowledge. All the faculty of IISER’s is regionally divided according to their location like most of Professor’s at IISER Kolkata are bengali’s.
The reason of writing this is to convey the message to all the Directors of IISER’s to stop fooling students for their sake of interest which is nothing but money.

  11. iiser kolkata,1st yr student says:

well i almost agree with the facts presented above

the first batch is likely to get no placement.i myself m in grief of kicking an ism seat through iitjee.

we plead the director to plz put on a placement cell.every family is nott as rich as directors family.many of us require job.and if iiist students can get involved in research wrk after b.e wid job then why cant we

  12. bechara says:

Hi, I am first year student at IISER kolkata. I DON’T KNOW WHAT TO DO. no placements here. i and my classmates left out many options of prestigious engineering colleges like IITs (although not getting good branches),IIST,NITs,T.S.CHANKYA,MERY MUMBAI and many more . But we found nothing good here. here we have to study all subject even the damm biology which i left after 10th and i never expected to meet it again .but in iiser you have to ready to suffer .there are also regional discrimination.if you are not bengoli and don’t know bengoli please think once before coming here.its hard to get good grades and recommendation for projects.(this is my personal opinion). please don’t come here for fellowship as this is not important than your life. but if you like to study and your parents left enough money for you so that you don’t need to earn please come here and do Ph.d, then post doc then continue research work.( i think hard to find such type of guys). some of my friends who came here in first attempt trying hard to get out of this trap ( i am not lucky as they are.i came here in second attempt.i thought that wasting 1 year make my future but unfortunately i wasted my whole life).one more thing to say that in our batch 2008 kvpy students came here without interview as interview is not held due to some reasons. They placed their legs here without having much effort compared to us.most of them have JEE scores around 30-50 which is very less compared to JEE students scores 150-200+ (of course i am not talking about sc-st canidates please don’t mind ).although few of them are very good.so if you ask them about the institute them will say it’s nice as they don’t actually deserve it and they haven’t so much options as we had that time ( but now we have no option ).i am not giving my name as i have to take my degree from this college.but if you have any queries please join us on orkut community iiser kolkata.
ok friends, best of luck for iit-jee 2010.
    thanks for your interest.

  13. Akki says:

    Dear all
I read the article proposed by Mr. Bechaara. I am a student from IISER Mohali first year and I would completely disagree with the ideas proposed in the above post! The fact is that Mr. Bechara is from a community which we call the community of tortured. These are the group of students who wanted to pursue engineering that too top branch and also from a top name.

The fact is that if you want to survive in IISER you have to have the basic instinct of pure and applied science in you. Its not like that you just join the IISER for the sake that this is an Indian Institute and also you are provided with scholarship of Rs. 5000p.m. You have to have a complete faith on science before you join in the MS programme at IISERs. If you do not have a complete interest in pure and applied science then I beg you not to join IISERs as the next year you will be writing such posts that are really disheartening for the you budding gen next scientists. All the more IISERs in their principles do not welcome the students who are not into science and who are forced by their parents. Many such eminent personalities are prevailing in our own institute and I can see the pain in their eyes when they failed to make themselves synchronised with the system. This only destroys the environment out there and I for sure discard the entry of such elements!

Now for those who really want to take up science as their career, IISERs are the heaven for such people. You are given a complete freedom out here and you can perform any activity that you want and that can help you open up your mind. The labs are open any time during the working hours for the students to come and perform the experiments. You are put in the research mode as soon as you enter the IISERs. The course structure is fantastic, no hectic schedule and all other co-curricular activities are cherished out there. You are really put in all the good qualities of a young scientist and you can come up and proudly say, “I proud to be an IISERian”!!!!

To the one who really want to pursue science as a career please post in your queries and doubts and FAQs on wakeupforscience@gmail.com!!!!

    Cheers!!!!!!!!
    Yours Sincerely
    Akki

  14. NRI says:

Just went through some of the posts stating against IISER’s. It is a pity that majority of the Indian youths today are still stuck to the ideas of the 1960′s and are not even aware what the current trends and requirements in academic scene. It seems they can’t visualize beyond the age old format lifestyle of engineers and doctors.

An engineering degree is not going fetch a good job in days to come unless it is from IIT or BITS pilani. The Interdisciplinary courses will fetch better and secured jobs. IT sector’s growth has reduced and will remain same for quite some time hence salaries will remain low for the techno coolies. China produces better quality engineers than India. China has more than 70 technical universities which are better than the IIT’s in India.

IISER’s do have good future and placements will be great for those who pass with reasonably good grades. The students who are having difficulty in passing will definately face difficulty in placements and so is the case in every institute includind the IIT’s. The first 5 or 6 batches will be placed well as the immediate requirement is immence. The courses at the IISER’s are very well planned and in line with the best American Universities. Students you all should take advantage of these IISERs. Don’t just go by what a few students say. Students who can’t cope will always grumble and need “bahanas” to back their inabilities.
There are plenty of student even at the IIT’s who grumble and leave IIT when the can’t cope with it, and some even go further ahead and kill themselves.

This time Indian Gov. is not cheating the students at all. For the first time in 60 years- Indian Gov is spending such a huge amount on higher education. IISER’s are gaining enough global presence now a days. The kanjoos Indian Gov. is definately spending so much for something big.

When the IIT’s were newly set, many people then too had plenty of negative thoughts about its future. Many student then preferred (or rather adviced by others) to join the already existing regional colleges fearing they wont get jobs if they joined the IIT’s.

Go ahead the new Generation — IISER’s are indeed excellent institutes and surely going to have great placements. Good luck to all.

  15. NRI says:

Remember “the pasture is always greener the other side”

  16. NRI says:

IISER’s are already creating great global presence. Placements are definitely going to be very good for all those candidates who pass the course. If somebody fails to clear all the papers then ofcourse, it will be difficult to get a job at the first encounter but not impossible.
Placement cells are required only when there are a large number of students to be placed and opportunities are less, and this is not the case with IISER’s. Till now the no. of students are very less and opportunities are immense.

It is a pity that a few students are finding their course not good enough. The probable reason for it could be — they can’t cope with the curriculum which is difficult and different. For such students the advice is — they should leave the course immediately before it is too late and should get into some simpler course. A loss of 1 or 2 years in academics will not really change their life.

The curriculum of IISER is too good and is in the line of current trends and requirements of the globe and not only India. The placements are going to be great.

There are plenty of IIT/IIM students too, who criticize their institute and say it is a waste of time studying there. They are always the under performers and accuse the system to be corrupt, caste based, region based, etc.etc.. A few recommendations from professors does not affect one’s carrier path. About Bengali professors — they are everywhere and are very successful in the western world. In fact they are quite sorted after.

Gov. of India is not cheating the students at all, in fact it is aiming to give a challenging and meaning-full future. The able students will see a great future.

IISER’s are gaining enough global presence now a days. The kanjoos Indian Gov. is definitely spending so much for something big. Indian Gov should actually abolish the quota seats (SC/ST/OBC) for its premier institutes (IIT/IISC/IISER/IIST/IIM/AIIMS)in India at least, to maintain certain level of intellectual standards. Merit should be the only criteria. The not so meritorious students suffer a lot in coping up and always feel misled and misplaced in life, which is actually true to an extent. Faulty Gov. policies are responsible. Gov. should instead provide more fund for the economically backward meritorious students. This would change India for a better tomorrow.

When the IIT’s were newly set, many people then too had plenty of negative thoughts about its future. Many student then preferred (or rather adviced by others) to join the already existing regional colleges fearing they wont get jobs if they joined the IIT’s. You know what IIT’s are today. Same is the case with IISER’s. IISer’s may see even greater heights than the IIT’s.

  18. K says:

i am also the student of iiser kolkata.First thing i want to tell to AKI and NRI that i am in the institute which is ahead of their iiser’s establishments and our first batch is going to pass next year. The official meeting held somewhere around two months before in our institute and in that meeting our director told that their will be no placement’s in iiser-kolkata and those who want placement please leave the institute.
so,AKI and NRI please do’nt think about placement.you are in iiser for research and becoming scientists.we are eating india’s poor peoples tax paid money as a fellowship so we must have to do Phd and post Doc. then think about becoming prof. in research universities to do some good research in india only.
our government is spending so much on us around each iiser will be given 500 corers in next five years and please keep in mind that this all india is doing not to give you placements but create scientists who work for india so my friends please don’t think about placements we are here for sacrificing our life to science and please keep in your mind that no research of higher level can be done after getting simply M.S degree you have to do higher studies.I support no placement idea and it is very good for students who are really intrested in science and not in money.

  19. K says:

ok these all about placements.don’t fool student’s on the basis of placements and rather tell them if they really love science and ready to sacrifice their life for science like Einstein and many other good scientists born in history then iiser is the best institute in india.

  20. K says:

    for AKKI and NRI.
Ok you all are writing so much about science and placements. Please give me one answer from your heart and don’t lie. What you will do if you get iit-jee rank-1 you will choose science or engineering as your career. By seeing your blog and desire of yours for placements i think you will say engineering but if you have the courage to say science that time you will become the real scientist which india is in great need.
last thing i want to tell you most of us are here in iiser because we did’nt get good ranks and good engineering colleges tell me anybody who are in iiser with iit-jee rank less than 2000.I respect science so much.plesase
please tell me iiser is following which american universities syllabus…………..??????????

  21. Param says:

    To K.
i love science and even if i m getting air 1 in iitjee i will opt for iiser not iit….thats my love 4 science

  22. NRI says:

    Dear K,

I am glad that IISER’s are not going to provide any placement assistance after MS course otherwise; the mission of higher education would have been unsuccessful. Higher education is the prime need of the hour. However, there is going to be jobs available after MS also which one can apply directly. PhD holders in science are going to have a great and secured future.

Even today the successful IITians outside India need to do MS and then PhD for a secure future and in the process they spend at least 11years(4+2+5) on education. Plain B-Tech holders do not hold very attractive jobs. Currently many (in lakhs) Engineers from India (including IIT’s) in the USA are practically jobless and are surviving on petty jobs like primary school teachers, taking tuitions, working in malls etc. but still they prefer to stay there for the elevated lifestyle.

The fund that goes to the IIT’s are also from the poor man’s taxes. IIT’s were also designed to provide good quality engineer for India and not for USA.

Each year there are quite a few students who secure a place in top 100 of IIT-JEE and opt for studying physics or mathematics in IIT. I am sure they are not fools since they did not opt for B-Tech..

Mr./Ms K, Why did you join an institute of higher education when you wanted to do job after masters degree. I believe one needs to spend only 8 years at IISER to get a PhD degree and that is great. You actually save 3 years on your education to earn a PhD.
Studying science (higher) is no sacrifice at all as there is good money in it and if you don’t agree then your vision is obstructed by ignorance. No one can help you then. Forget history and learn to be in present and future. Realize the trends. If Einstein were alive today, he would have been a very rich man.
If one’s need is to simply earn big money then why study – instead do financial frauds, extortion, burglary, prostitution, pornography, etc. Career begins very early in these professions

The retirement age for Engineers in India is around 58 to 60 years whereas; Academicians and Researchers retire at 65 to 67 years.

  23. Tuhin Paul says:

I am selected and now I am really damn confused ..

  24. HEMANT SHARMA says:

I fully agree as far as love for science is concerned, but everybody’s first concern is his basic needs, research, science, huminity, dedication ets all come afterwards. Can anyone of those who advocate dedication for science & research tell me whether all the parents whose wards are admitted in IISERs afford to engage their wards in research work without earning for survival. Everybody does not enough resources to engage in research at his own cost & without earning for himself and his dependents. Iknow a person whose son is quite inteligent as he had secured good rank in IITJEE & AIEEE last year. Truly speaking, he could not send his son to good college for want of money. Doing research alone does not give food, shelter. You can do research only if you have no tension of feeding and bringing up your dependents. Can you imagine any person, in today’s world, who is hungry, has no resources to survive but is engaged in research work? Please remember “TAN KI HAVAS MUN KO BEEMAR BANA DETI HAI, ACHCHE BAAG BAGICHO KO BEKAAR BANA DETI HAI, BHOOKHE LOGO KO DESHBHAKTI SIKHANE WALO, BHOOKH INSAAN KO GADDAAR BANA DETI HAI” and also “WAQT KI ANDHI ME JAHAN BADAL JAATA HAI, UMAR KI RAAH PAR INSAN BADAL JAATA HAI, KASOOR MAINEY NAHEE KIYA HAI ROTI KI KASAM, BHOOKH KI DUNIYA MEI EEMAAN BADAL JAATA HAI”
So, please do not talk only of dedication to research, science etc only. They must be there but after ensuring one’s survival i.e. meeting his basic needs. All citizens of India are not so wealthy that they can devote their life to scientific research without earning for their survival. Independent research work also needs money which again requires jobs/placement as all do n ot have good business. I can bat that if completion of basic needs are guaranteed, there are lot of minds who are much better than many existing researchers (Researchers please take it in right sense) but they are deprived of proving their talent because of their being resourceless and having first concern to earning livelyhood.
So friends, assuring the students that they will get appropriate placements after IISER is a must so that they may become tension free about their future and engage themselves in research work with increeased enthusiasm and energy.

  25. NRI says:

Very good jobs after PHd from IISER’s are assured and in true sense. Now a days MNC researchers earn hell lot of money. It seems even the Govt. placements would be at a higher level. The Bhokha – piyasa researcher’s days are over around a decade and half ago. The growth areas for next two decades are in scientific valuable research — Nano sciences, bio materials, biomedicine, biotech, earth science, astro science are the areas to look for.

Remember, now research is done as a profession (and not passion alone) and it fetches a good salary. A researcher does not go and donate his knowledge for nothing. A govt. researcher earns the same amount as a govt Doctor or Engineer earns. In private sector some researchers earn much more than many engineers do. Independent research is not the trend of the century. Learn to surf with the tide, you will gain and if one goes against the tide then, chance of a disaster is always there. Higher education at present is like a big tidal wave — it depends on an individual whether he/she will go with it or against it. There is enough money in science study these days. It is a myth that researchers don’t earn enough.

All citizens are not expected to do scientific research, only the brilliant ones are expected to do so. A mediocre mind heading for research will end up with frustrations and no doubt about it.

Yes I fully agree with Hemant that the scientific community today has many inefficient people. This happened because most people ran after quantity instead of quality – a typical 3rd world syndrome. Now it is high time that India begins to think in positive direction to be able to sustain the growing global demands. Knowledge now is absolutely essential for a nation to survive.

By the way who is forcing whom to study science? If a person does not want to study science then he need not. Simple as that. Govt. has also not forced anybody to do so. Govt. has only provided an opportunity for those who want to study science and it is doing its duty.

We Indians are very used to formated life styles. We are taught by our seniors to follow- follow and only follow.
Why don’t we realize that we can set trends too which the world will follow. Sadly, We fear to think big and differently. To reach a destination there is never one fixed path but many alternatives exists. Short cuts need not be the best and comfortable.

If a person thinks life is all about job and earning after a mere graduation degree, then get married by the age of 25 and have 2 kids before 30 years of age — then higher education is not recommended for such Papaji’s and chachaji’s. After all everything good is not meant for everybody.

  26. Aakash Sharawat says:

I am sorry for the late reply to your mail. I read and the sayings were fantastic no doubt. But dear the thing is that no one is forcing you to join any sort of research program. The thing is that if you want to take job just after your graduation then also IISERs are good source as the company has all its research and development department waiting eagerly for such students. You need not worry, we never wanted anyone who is not so sure about a career after spending 5 years in IISERs. The thing is that you should have a trust on yourself and that you will do good in whatever you join.
Take it a personal advice from me that dear do not dare to join IISER because you will not be able to survive in there. All the time you will be under the mental pressure of having placements after your graduation and if you dare to talk to the director about placement you will be for sure fired off from the MS program. The students over there who joined in, you do not know them, you do not know how they are planning their future, they do not think about a good placement no matter whatever background they are from, They just think of one thing that they have to devote their five years to science and then its science that will repay them. Dear in the IISERs there is a mixture of all sorts of people and from different backgrounds. No doubt many are there who are troublesome and also do not deserve to be IISERians and also they are distroying the environment out there but who can stop them? Let them but if you go and search about the career options after MS from IISERs you will come to know the truth very soon,

Anyways I would like if you will remain in touch with me all the five years of your life so that we can both analyse each others’ career and help our future generation go in one particular direction.

    Keep in touch
    Have a good day
    Take care

  27. HEMANT SHARMA says:

    Respected Aakash Ji,
Thank you very much for response. My intention behind disseminating the ideas was only to say that there are many persons who are acpable of doing quality research, they are indeed interested from the inner most heart to do it but they can’t do it only & only for want of adequate support as they are not wealthy enough to undertake research work on their own and at the same time have other responsibilities too. If some way their tension regarding their sustainence is removed, I can assure that they will prove themselves much better scientists. Kindly analyse a situatoion where a person, belonging to an average family,is intelligent enough, has caliber & capability to do good research work and is whole heartedly interested in research work but is unable to take up research work because he has to feed himself & his dependents (not necessarily children & wife). Would you please agree that if a source of livelihood in the form of a suitable placement is provided to him, he can definitely benefit the country and the scientific fraternity to great extent, because he has every thing needed for the purpose i.e. ability, brilliance, a will power and enthusiastic desire to do so. My signal was towards such person. However can you please tell me in the clearest terms what atre the job avenues after MS from IISER?

I again extend my sincere thanks for your response. Kindly keep the dialogue on, I have to learn much from you and I shall be seeking your guidance on every step.
Would you favour me by responding this mail?

    Hemant Sharma

  28. HEMANT SHARMA says:

In response to one NRI’s (07 May 2010) where he says that who is forcing whom to study science, I want to say only that it is one’s inner soul who INSPIRES (not forces) to study science but at the same time it is question of social responsibilities (for which resources, I mean earning, are required) that FORCES him to remain away from it and stops him to do so. Freedom from tension of livelyhood fills one with increased enthusiasm to do research and under such situation, outcome of research is always and surely the excellent one. So there is definitely a need of creating a firm belief among the gen next scientists that they will surely get a good source of survival after IISER’s M S degree.

  29. NRI says:

There are more jobs today in scientific field than any other field. Salaries are attractive now. Sensible s will surely grab the opportunities. Old fashioned ideas will take time to fade out. IISER s already have a global presence and is not just considered as another new institute that are mushrooming in India. It is a pure Central Govt. institute and hence it will not behave like the private colleges and do the placement cell dramabajis. Private colleges rope in candidates mainly through their placement stories/dramas which are quite untrue.

Candidates who want job after MS can apply for PSU jobs. Keep a watch on employment news. Have to qualify in the written test and interview. PSU s take up many MS/M.Sc graduates every year for their R&D wing. Pharmaceutical companies require many MS/M.Sc graduates each year. P.Hd holders earn better positions. So there are ample jobs for the able and confident ones who can clear the tests.

  31. HEMANT SHARMA says:

Don’t worry about jobs after IISER, they are sure. IISERs really have a very good future. If research is your aim, then I can say that nothing is better than IISER for you. Even if you want to choose teaching as career, IISER are the best because level of knowledge imparted here is much better that any other institution. Please remember that these are Government of India’s Institution and just “yet another institution in the crowd” of such ones mushrooming in India these days. These are unique ones having a shining future for themselves as well as for their students.
I remember my Papa telling me that when IITs were started, people used to say many things about them. Even some persons, as my Papa tells, left IITs to join other Engineering colleges at that time. But today you are seeing the competition for addmission in IITs. Same is going to happen about IISERs too. The era to come is of pure sciences and research. Almost all MNCs have their independent R & D departments. GOI is laying much eemphasis on scientific research.
IISERs have already marked their global presence and have got global recognition.

  32. KR says:

    @sarayu
better u should not join iiser because as u r not crazy for science.I am iiser student and i got 8000 rank in iit jee this year and i am going to leave it because of not placement but because of i’m not interested in science.
You should apply for rgipt because it has better option for u in petroleum engineering…

Please note that iisers are also good option if u r really interested in science and ready to study more in your life.

I hav read most of the articles posted in this site. & nw m totaly confused abt whos ri8 & whos wrong. i hav been selected in iiser & got iiser kol in the counselling. But m really very confused abt what 2 do……..!

  34. confused says:

    hi!!1
I am getting integrated PhD degree in iiser kolkata and i want your opinion regarding this. Should i opt for the institution or its a mistake , kindly guide me please.

  35. iiser_student says:

Well, it was surprising to see so much dissent against IISER. Though myself being an iiser Kolkata student, it is not hard to understand from where this kind of attitude comes from.

Every day I see students wasting away their time, never ever touching their books, wasting away their time on useless things. And when the exams comes, they come up with most amazing marks, bordering on the zero. And then they start posting such stuff on public forums. It is really sad to see govt. money being wasted on such students. These should be kicked out of iiser and put in stupid engg. colleges, which will get them placed like domestic animals in companies like congizent, tcs and wipro. And remain IT slaves for the rest of their lives. I really pity these creatures.

For the ones who love science, and are enjoying what they are studying (which is a vast majority).. they are absolutely in the finest of places. IISER offers the greatest flexibility of choosing your majors after 2 years… which is provided nowhere else in India. 2 years gives you sufficient time to understand your strengths and weaknesses, and choose your interests. Students at iiser do their summer projects at the best of research institutes across the country. Students from iiser kolkata are doing their summer training in IISc, JNCASR, TIFR, HBCS, JNU, NGRI, different IITs, etc. Many students have gone abroad for their summer trainings.

The myth that research does not pay is really a myth. Scientists across the globe are among the highest paying executives, drawing packages comparable to management grads. It is not that you will have to depend on your wife’s salary if you go into research .. lol! Ultimately, how much you earn depends on what you CAN do and not what degree you have. If you have the zeal, you will earn more than your counterparts from iits.

Regarding placement in iiser kolkata, the first years should not speak without knowing the full truth. When director had asked how many of you want placements, only 3 students raised their hands. Rest wanted to do PhD.

For students confused about iiser, I urge you not to go by the words of these stupid characters, whose only want in life is to get a job, marry and have kids. Be brave. Stand out from the crowd, do what your heart desires.

    Best of luck !

  36. iiser_2010 student says:

in response to iiser_student,today i am very happy that indeed getting a good rank in aieee & other exams i took a great decision to study science in IISER.my journey is begining from 10th august.up today i am confused about future but now i have no confusion at all.

  37. BKG says:

no doubt iisers are very good concept. only thing is that govt should provide good emoluments while doing research like residency done by doctors after M.B.B.S.

Faculty should be well trained in teaching and should not be partial in giving grades to students as is happening now a days in all IISERS.

You need to apply after that.

  43. Akki says:

    To K

With all India rank 1 not only me but also the fool who is showing his love for science will go for engineering in the IITs………………. and also you too K…………… Well let me tell you I did join science because I gave science my second preference after engineering at IITs……….. I left engineering at NIT-Trichy just for the sake of preference to science but this is all true that I gave engineering at IITs the higher preference than doing MS at IISERs and that is true because and engineering degree from IITs will in some way assure you a far better life than doing MS at IISER. Joining IISER is a matter of struggle. If you would be able to hold on to your grounds and come up with a success you are not just paying any way for yourself but also for the future students who are coming following your footmarks. And I do appreciate anyone from IISER going for MBA and IAS because according to me we must show to everyone that we are not a uni dimensional person but rather a multi-dimensional persons who can flag off the victory flag anywhere in the world.

All the very best K, I am not at all saying you are wrong but I would also say that what I said had a truth in it too. If IIT’s M.Sc. students can get placement then why not us…………………

Have a great day and a very bright future.
    Akki

i got 6381 rank in JEE2011 and got 300 marks in BITSAT.. but interested in science.which IISER is best for physics? please help me out. i am damn confused

  45. Utkarsh says:

The true fact about the most of the indian students is that they just want to get settled as quick as possible. Most of the students just want a job with a handsome salary just after they complete their so called wierdo B.Tech. But on the international level we stand no where and this is just because of this attitude. The most interesting fact is that India is the only country to produce so called engineers in so much bulk( One of the countries to produce maximum number of engineers) but our nation has no engineering marvels and this is because they are becoming engineers just to earn money not for engineering interests, Today the scope of engineering is prevailing so the students are running after it, a decade back everyone was running after M.Sc because it was prevailing at that time. A regular trend that we all see is that doing MBA after engineering these are not the traits of a engineering oriented student, the IITs are losing their ranks at the international level for the same reason and the only Institute of India that is shining always is IISc Bangalore and soon the IISERs will do the same if students with good aptitude reach there. As we all know the entrance criteria of our so called prestigious IITs is a shit , i mean set of objective questions nothing such as subjective to test the real knowledge ( jugaad to aap log jantey hi honge sawaal karney ke) so we are degrading. This is the truth about our engineers that are produce in IITs ,only a handfull are really deserving, and if i am wrong then where is the NOBEL PRIZE after Sir C.V Raman, The IISERs are the best place to start for students who are interested in research , good things come only after a long process so keep patience while you do research, a true researcher never thinks of jobs, it comes to him automatically due to his skills. So keep working hard Even the Maxwell Boltzmann Statistics says average energy molecules(Most of The B.Techs{money money money money}) are high in number and molecules with high energy ( true science lovers) are lesser in number so just relax and be peaceful and the NOBLE PRIZE we are going to get it really soon.

  46. Tanuj says:

I believe that many people dont take up research work coz of financial crisis…

  47. anees says:
